No Cookies in the Library

Had to add this. I love it.

finding new feeds (wk 4, ex 9)

I found a few new feeds to add to my Bloglines...

Using Technorati's search tool, I found:

Library Revolution
LibraryCrunch
The Beached Librarian (I really like this one)
Librarian at the Kitchen Table (actually already knew this one, but I'd forgotten about it!)

I preferred Technorati's search over the others I tried today, mostly because I liked the ranking of 'authority' that Technorati does, and the ability to see how blogs link to one another...

bloglines and rss (wk 4, ex 8)

This was fun. I've used other readers (NewsGator, Google Reader) in the past, but this was a good motivation to try a new one. I added a short blogroll to the right side of my blog. If you haven't encountered Unshelved before, check it out.

facebook musings (wk 3, ex 7)

Since there are almost 600 UVI students using Facebook (and perhaps many more), I wonder if this is something that could be useful for the library. Other libraries seem to be interacting with their patrons this way, some of them very successfully. A number of library/librarian groups on Facebook are full of suggestions and great discussions about the idea. Just a thought for some further exploration...

flickr fun (wk 3, ex 6)

In exploring some Flickr mashups and 3rd party tools, I found some I really liked:

  • Flickeur creates an ongoing 'film' by stringing together random images from Flickr, although it's more complex than that, since earlier images begin appearing as shadows amongst later images. Watching it, I found it hard to believe that it was truly random, since my mind kept trying to spot connections between the images...
  • Retrievr allows you to sketch an image, and then find Flickr images which resemble your sketch. Their colors and shapes will be similar, but their content will be entirely unrelated. You sketch and the associated images have an URL, so you can go back and look later, or send it around. Here's one of mine...
  • Clockr shows you the current time, using various digit images from Flickr.

books by color (wk 3, ex 5)

bookshelf spectrum, revisited

I've always secretly wanted to do this to my books. Or part of a library (no, I won't really do it!)...

More about Flickr fun later.

Habits of lifelong learners (wk 1, ex 2)

That was an interesting tutorial. I'm not sure I've ever called myself a "lifelong learner", but the concept is very familiar. People have asked why I've always loved libraries, and I've tried to explain that it's my need to be a "perpetual information and idea sponge" (or something similar). But I think it's the same idea as "lifelong learning".

Of the 7 1/2 habits, I find 'use technology to your advantage' the easiest to do. Technology just opens up so many extra paths, taking advantage seems obvious. Probably the hardest habit for me is: 'have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner', since I tend to prefer wandering-learning and as-needed learning over the highly-structured, extended learning processes. But perhaps this works alright in the "lifelong learning" context.

Here I am! (wk 2, ex 3)

Welcome. This is my base for exploring 23 Things and the 2.0 world...
